Before Christmas TG4 aired Soup Stone Productions first documentary for the station, a film about the last generation of Coal Miners in Arigna, Roscommon. Filming in Arigna Mines ‘These men faced the most difficult conditions of any miners in western Europe..lying and digging coal in seams that were only 18 inches deep’ said Director Cyril Kelly. The programme was very well received, gaining almost double the anticipated audience for it’s Sunday night slot and becoming the second most popular programme on the station that week. ‘We were obviously very happy,’ said Cyril ‘and are developing some more ideas for the station.’ The project also received press interest from the Belfast Telegraph and local papers and was actually picked up by some of the American papers. The California Chronicle included a piece as did newspapers in Miami, Philadelphia and Chicago. |
